Become a member to help build a better economics for our futures, our communities and our planet.
Mainstream economics refuses to reckon with colonial histories, ignores planetary boundaries and naturalises inequality. Traditional education banks on us to passively consume and replicate the status quo.
BUT WE ARE NOT PASSIVE. WE ARE RETHINKERS.
Together, we look beyond what can be crudely mathematised and monetised to consider the health and wellbeing of our communities and our planet.
We learn from the social movements of our times and the daily lives of those marginalised by capitalism. We equip ourselves with the tools to challenge the prevailing ideologies that shape governments, institutions, businesses, and civil society. We develop our practice so we can build just, resilient and sustainable economies fit for people and the planet.
There are a number of subsidised memberships available. If you are unable to pay for a membership, or are in a country where making an online payment isn’t possible, then get in touch with us by completing this form and we will be in touch.

Frequently asked questions
Who can become a member?
The REI membership is open for everyone from the age of 18 and up to the age of 35.
Those over 35 can join as a “Solidarity Member” — see below for more detail.
What is my membership fee used for?
Every membership contribution will help us become independent and less reliant on grant funding and philanthropy.
Our members fund Rethinking Economics International’s work, help pay memberships forward for people who would otherwise struggle to join, and bolster the Activity Fund so our groups can run wildly successful campaigns.
Do I have to be a REI member to start a local group?
At least three people need to be REI members to start a local group.
Already organising but not yet a member? No problem, this will only be a criteria as and when you choose to reaffiliate your group next year.
Do I have to be a REI member to take part in my local group activities or campaigns?
No, all the activities and events organised by local groups are open to anyone, however the group training, resources, and member-only events organised by Rethinking Economics International will only be available to REI members.
Can I become a member if I'm not a student at university?
Yes! Our membership is open to everyone up to the age of 35 whether you are in formal education or not, or are further along in your career. We welcome everyone who has an interest in connecting with other Rethinkers across the world, learning more about decolonial, climate-conscious and people-focussed economics.
I’m over 35 – can I become a member?
If you are over 35 you can become a Solidarity Member. This will give you access to all the member events, training and resources.
However, to make sure we build a truly youth-led movement, Solidarity Members over the age of 35 won’t be able to vote representatives to local or regional councils.
How much does membership cost?
Suggested membership fees are:
Student: 5 USD/GBP/EUR
Waged: 15 USD/GBP/EUR
WagedPlus: 25 USD/GBP/EUR Support someone else’s membership in addition to your own.
We recognise the challenge of having set membership bands in a global community so there is also an option to pay what you are able. Those that are not in a financial position to pay or cannot (e.g. due to lack of Visa or Debit card) can also ask for a subsidised membership. Find more information below!
I can’t afford to pay a membership contribution right now – can I still become a member?
Yes, there are a limited number of subsidised memberships available. These are funded by our paying membership and sometimes from grants and other funders.
If you are unable to pay for a membership, or are in a country where making an online payment isn’t possible, then get in touch with us by completing this form and we will be in touch.
