We want an economics education that recognises planetary boundaries and that reflects on how we can build a society that works for all people.
We want an education that offers a diverse range of economic perspectives: from ecological to feminist, institutional to complexity.
The world is beginning to realise the many ways in which mainstream economic thought has been failing our societies. The climate crisis, pandemics, and growing global inequality demonstrate the need for change.
The problem we face is the total dominance of a single and outdated form of economics at universities, which promotes the marketisation of society, leading to increased inequality, injustice and significant harm to the natural world. We need students of economics to leave university with a tool-kit of skills they can use to help us face these challenges effectively.
HOW TO GET INVOLVED
If you are a student that wants to join the campaign to change your curriculum, sign up using this form. We’ll invite you to our next campaign check-in session!
WHAT’S THE CAMPAIGN?
In this campaign we want to bring ecological economics into the economics classroom! Rethinking Economics International alongside with allies like Doughnut Economics Action Lab have been working hard to develop learning materials and campaigning tools to help you bring questions of ecological, power and climate into your studies.
Aim: Introduce a module to your economics curriculum that provides students with learning on critical perspectives on ecological economics.
CHANGE IS POSSIBLE!
Although it might feel daunting at times, change is possible. How do we know this? Because in many places, it has already happened.
Over the last decade, young RE campaigners in our global network achieved over 80 campaign wins in 15 countries, from complete overhaul of economics curricula, to new elective modules and core courses. These changes benefit tens of thousands of economics students around the world – providing a more critical, real-world perspective and teaching them about topics they will face in their future careers.
