ELEH aka the Latin American School of Heterodox Economics, 2026 edition.
Founded in 2021, the Escuela Latinoamericana de Economía Heterodoxa (ELEH) or the Latin American School of Heterodox Economics has since held four editions. Its first edition was conducted virtually during the COVID-19 pandemic, and as soon as conditions allowed, it transitioned to an in-person format. The school has been hosted in Buenos Aires, Argentina; Belo Horizonte, Brazil; and Bogotá, Colombia.
Economics curricula at most universities prioritize neoclassical theory, limiting students’
exposure to pluralistic and critical approaches. In countries of the Global South, this
challenge is compounded by the predominance of knowledge produced in other contexts,
which often fails to reflect their historical, cultural, and structural realities. In response, the
ELEH emerged as an intensive educational program designed for social sciences students
with the goal of fostering critical and pluralistic thinking through a heterodox economics
curriculum. The school also seeks to serve as a meeting space where students from across Latin America can exchange experiences about their curricula and local contexts.
This year, the venue will be the Graduate Division of the School of Economics (DEPFE) of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). The school will be held from 7th to 11th September 2026. We are very excited to host 80 in-person participants and 22 speakers across two tracks- Heterodox Macroeconomics and Critical Studies of Inequality. We will welcome speakers from the following partner institutions: the
School of Economics of UNAM, El Colegio de México, OXFAM, Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung
(FES), Program for Development Studies (PUED) of UNAM, Espinosa-Yglesias Study
Center (CEEY), Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (CEPAL) and
New York University. This year, the program will also produce two academic outcomes: a dossier in collaboration with El Colegio de México and a special issue in ‘Economía Informa’, Journal of the School of Economics of UNAM.
ELEH is a flagship offering from De América Soy (DAS), the Latin American network of Rethinking Economics International. This year, we are joined by two local university groups as co-organisers – RE UNAM and RE UFMG.
