The Starting a University Group Training is a 4-session course for those who just started or are in the process of establishing a University Group, as well as for new organisers entering leadership roles in existing groups.
The next training will start on 2 September at 0900 EDT // 1300 UTC // 1400 BST // 1500 SAST // 1830 IST.
The deadline to apply to this training is: 16th August 2026.
The series will then run for four weeks at the same time:

What is covered in the training?

Session 1 dives into the key steps of setting up a chapter. It focuses on understanding RE mission and the role that University Groups can play. It will be a chance to meet the other Rethinkers on the training!

Session 2 focuses on building relationships and growing your group, highlighting the importance of collecting information.

Session 3 gets participants thinking about their institution and where power lies within it

Session 4 shares tips about running your very first launch event. It also touches upon Popular Education and discusses the best practices around organising events in terms of strategy, purpose and logistics.

When does it take place? The University Group Training usually takes place twice a year – in March/April and in September/October. It is four online sessions of 1.5 hours each, every week for four consecutive weeks.

Who can apply? The training is only open to REI members. It is principally designed for current students and recent graduates but may be of interest to anyone who is:

interested to start a Rethinking Economics local chapter

already a member of a group and wanting to brush up their organisational skills

Are there requirements? The training is only open to REI members. Every participant needs to be able to actively engage in the sessions as far as possible, as this is an interactive training. This means turning on microphone and camera during the Zoom meeting. For those unable to do this due to low bandwidth, data costs for a limited number of members will be provided and a YouTube livestream will be available.
