The Economic Histories of the Global South (EHGS) seminar series is designed as a flagship curation of online events that aims to bring together outstanding scholars and scholarship in Economic History from across South Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean, Sub-Saharan Africa, Middle-East and North Africa in a comparative discussion.
Through this series, we want to build a network of intellectual exchange and collaborations among historically minded scholars in the Global South to rethink and more importantly, trespass the boundaries of disciplines of economics and history and to do so outside established Global North-centric narratives. Our ultimate goal is to use the tools of historical enquiry to stay attentive to the dialectical connection between past and present; and bringing together historical scholarship that is strategically useful for addressing the challenges of social-economic and political transformation in the present.
In 2025, the first edition of the series maintained a strong focus on labour and subaltern histories to understand the historical trajectories of the working populations that today shape the global economy and was organised in collaboration with the New Political Economy Initiative (Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, India).
2026 onwards, the series is convened by Zaen Alkazi, Sonal Raghuvanshi, Ingy Higazy and Laura Philips. It is a collaboration between Rethinking Economics International, Pathways Beyond Neoliberalism: Voices from MENA (American University in Cairo, Egypt) and WITS Institute for Social and Economic Research (University of Witwatersrand, South Africa).
This series is open to members of the public. Recordings from this series are available as a playlist on the Rethinking Economics Youtube channel.
