Beyond Capitalism Club

Beyond Capitalism Club (BCC) is a graduate student organization at UC Berkeley housed by the Haas School of Business. We were born out of the Open Letter on the Social Responsibility of Business, which was a direct response to the Friedman Doctrine and its claim that the social responsibility of business is to increase its profits. Our revised definition is that the social responsibility of business is to generate long-term value for all its stakeholders. BCC focuses on building bridges between stakeholders from other graduate schools across the university. Our goal is to drive culture change within business education, specifically with regard to how the core curriculum is taught, to prepare leaders to pursue careers in support of an evolved and just economic system that works better for people and the planet. Our flagship event is the Beyond Capitalism Debate Series, and we also facilitate a book club and discussion group twice a week.
